The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, tenure-track/tenured Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor: Marine Geologist (Sea Floor Sediments) position (depending on qualifications).

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Any hiring at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor with indefinite tenure will be subject to a successful out-of-cycle tenure review process: .

This position is 1.0 FTE which includes 0.4 FTE university support and an expectation that the candidate raise 0.6 FTE of money through grants. Of that 0.6 FTE , 0.25 FTE is expected to be provided through the MARSSAM co-directorship such that 0.35 FTE will need to be provided from other grants.

This position in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences ( CEOAS ) will complement and expand current expertise related to marine geology and specifically marine sediments.

This position will serve in a leading role as a co-director of the Marine Rock and Sediment Sampling Group ( MARSSAM ; ), an NSF -supported facility housed at OSU which comprises a team of approximately six seagoing and shore-based professionals. MARSSAM assists US scientists with planning and conducting seafloor coring and dredging expeditions, maintains and provides sampling equipment, sails technicians and ensure science goals are met or exceeded. As a co-director, this position will be expected to lead and advance US coring operations on US Academic Research Fleet vessels.

The incumbent will demonstrate capabilities and/or high potential for research and teaching excellence that will inspire the next generation of marine geoscience students and early career researchers. This includes 1) creatively contributing to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in subjects related to geological oceanography; 2) building an international reputation in research as well as a strong externally funded research program; 3) supervising graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, providing mentorship and guidance in their academic and professional development; and 4) contributing to on-going college- and university-wide efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion ().

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.

Requirements :

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree in oceanography, geology, earth sciences, geophysics, or a related field by the start of employment.
• Experience conducting offshore sediment coring or related expeditions (e.g., drilling operations, borehole measurements)
• Demonstrated excellence in research
• Ability to develop an externally funded research program
• Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals of original research related to seafloor marine sediments.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching
• Expertise required to teach courses such as Sedimentary Processes in Ocean Basins (graduate level), Paleoceanography (undergraduate or graduate-level), Geological Oceanography (undergraduate level), and/or similar electives
• A commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
• Proficiency in oral and written English.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Type:

This position may require the ability to work in laboratory environments, field environments, and at sea on research vessels for day trips or extended periods, dependent on research needs. Field environments and at-sea work may require working in rough terrain, inclement weather, and/or strenuous environments and conditions.

The ability to lift/carry/ push/pull objects weighing 25 pounds is required.

Travel is required as needed to advance research programs.
