Job Description

About Us:
South Shore Conservatory (SSC) is a community school for the arts on Boston’s South Shore, welcoming individuals of all ages and abilities. With campuses in Hingham and Duxbury, SSC’s arts-based educational programs provide a creative path for a lifetime of learning, from childhood through adulthood, through outstanding faculty and nationally-celebrated programming in music instruction, ensembles, dance, early childhood education, creative arts therapy, performance, and community and public school partnerships.

Position Overview:
The Department Chair for Jazz/Rock/Pop and Percussion (JRP) is an active faculty member who provides leadership, coordination, and vision for the department across SSC’s campuses. The Chair fosters program growth, faculty engagement, and student success, while embodying SSC’s mission and values.

Responsibilities:
Administrative Leadership
  • Work with JRP faculty to strengthen existing programs, create new offerings, and collaborate with the Director of Programs and Curriculum on curriculum review and development.
  • Organize and strategize for signature events such as Open Mic, Spotlight Festival, Monster Jam, and Performathon; set goals to increase student participation from within and outside SSC, and support faculty involvement.
  • Plan and execute department recitals and performances, with a focus on attracting audiences from both within and outside SSC.
  • Identify and manage a realistic number and variety of ensembles; develop room and faculty schedules, and lead strong recruitment efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Arts Education to develop and manage department budgets and provide administrative follow-up as needed.
  • Create and coordinate vacation week program offerings.
  • Schedule, prepare agendas for, record minutes of, and facilitate at least four (quarterly) department meetings per year; ensure action items are addressed and information is communicated to faculty.
  • Oversee department gear, ensuring regular updates on repairs, new equipment, and studio needs for both Percussion and JRP areas.
Student Education
  • Deliver exceptional music education in Jazz, Rock, Pop, and Percussion for students of all ages through private lessons, ensembles, classes, and workshops.
  • Develop opportunities - ensembles, classes, workshops, concerts, and events - that foster diverse performance experiences for every SSC student and the broader community.
Collaboration and Community Engagement
  • Collaborate closely with JRP and Percussion faculty, other departments, and administrative staff to fulfill SSC’s mission and educational goals.
  • Actively promote SSC and the JRP/Percussion Department by organizing public concerts, workshops, masterclasses, and events that engage the South Shore community, SSC students, families, staff, and faculty.
Faculty Mentoring and Management
  • Support recruitment, hiring, orientation, onboarding, and retention of faculty.
  • Maintain open, transparent communication with department faculty, including annual one-on-one meetings.
  • Participate in faculty observation processes and encourage professional development, peer mentorship, and self-evaluation.
  • Foster a collegial and collaborative departmental culture.
Qualifications:
  • Degree in music performance or education preferred (graduate-level degrees a plus), but equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Experience in faculty management, program coordination, and team leadership in music or arts education.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills, with a customer service focus.
Additional Information:
Work schedule varies based on SSC and faculty needs, including some evenings, weekends, and early mornings. This position operates in a school-based office environment with physical requirements typical of such settings. Duties may change at any time as necessary.
