The position is full-time and offers a competitive salary along with a comprehensive benefits package.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Inspire faculty involvement and student engagement, voice, and leadership in the Chapel program.

  • Serve as the School’s chief caretaker, knowing and supporting individual community members, reaching out to those in need or crisis, and being omnipresent at community events.

  • Provide spiritual leadership for the School in times of celebration and in times of grief.

  • Liaise between the School and The Church of St. John the Divine and cultivate relationships and strategic partnerships with religious leaders across the greater Houston area.

  • Work closely with the School’s three division heads to align programs and messages.

  • Maintain strong ties between the Chapel program and the School’s academic and service-learning programs.

  • Teach a class in the Middle School or Upper School, advise, and/or coach as a way of supporting the School’s other programs and engaging students meaningfully, genuinely.

  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a graduate degree in religion or divinity

  • Ordination as a priest or minister, preferably in the Episcopal Church, with a minimum of five years of experience in a church or school

  • Deep, varied experience in pastoral care and/or personal counseling

  • Demonstrated ability to lead with grace, flexibility, humility, and steadiness, especially in the face of challenges

  • Inclusive theological perspective

  • Approachability and strong listening skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Great sense of humor

About St. John's School

St. John's is an independent, co-educational day school presenting a 13-year sequence of college preparatory training. A non-profit institution, it was founded in 1946 to provide the community with a school of exacting standards in the development of individual, spiritual, ethical, intellectual, social and physical growth. While the means to achieve that purpose may change, it remains the basic mission of the School. Located on a forty-one acre urban campus, the School has 1450 students supported by 340 faculty and staff members. The School seeks to develop the whole person in preparation for a lifetime of personal fulfillment and contribution to society. In particular, it is dedicated to the enhancement and the expansion of future leadership for Houston and the country. The School offers talented, motivated and energetic students a genuine challenge for academic accomplishment and for development of a sense of self-worth and of personal responsibility. The School in turn holds itself responsible for providing that challenge. Accreditation St. John's is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS), recognized by TEA.
