Job Description

G.P. Putnam’s Sons, an imprint of Penguin Random House, seeks an Editorial Assistant to join its team. The assistant’s role is to provide administrative and editorial support to the Editor-in-Chief who has her own fiction list and oversees the imprint as well. We are looking for a detail-oriented self-starter who reads voraciously across women’s fiction and the bestseller list, from literary to commercial, including book club fiction, historical fiction, love stories, rom-coms, and memoirs – and can communicate effectively about that reading experience.

The Editorial Assistant will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief responsible for acquiring and publishing such titles as Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, In Five Years by Rebecca Serle, The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris, None of This is True by Lisa Jewell, A Constellation of Vital Phenomenon by Anthony Marra and A Place for Us by Fatima Mirza. 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Communicates between authors, literary agents, and internal departments to coordinate and keep track of the production process from finished manuscript to bound book (including trafficking of copyedited manuscript, pages, galley copy, cover copy, and cover mechanicals).
  • Writes promotional copy including Title Information sheets, online retail copy, and package copy for supervisor’s approval.
  • Maintains metadata for all editor(s) titles.
  • Manages campaigns for endorsement quotes on various titles, including trafficking mailings (electronic and print) and revision approvals; Drafts pitch letters.
  • Prepares and routes P&Ls and contract information sheets for acquisitions.
  • Evaluates submissions in conjunction with supervisors and writes reader reports.
  • Attends editorial meetings and all relevant imprint meetings.
  • Begins training in editorial development of manuscripts in conjunction with the editorial team.
  • Provides general administrative support by scheduling meetings, prepping for department meetings, managing expense reports, archiving, maintaining hard copy and electronic files, etc.

  • Excellent writing skills, especially in writing promotional copy
  • Solutions-focused when met with challenges and can comfortably adapt to changes and anticipate needs when needed
  • Prior experience in bookselling is a plus

The salary for this position is $51,000.00. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.   

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
