Job Description

The Host-Producer is the primary voice and face of the show, responsible for writing and hosting podcast episodes and engaging with the audience on various platforms such as video, social media, Discord, etc. This also includes hosting live events and participating in KQED membership activities such as panel discussions and promos. The host/producer plays an essential role in setting the show’s editorial agenda along with the managing producer, editor, and producer, and will also participate in the show’s day-to-day audio production. They also play an essential role in shaping and participating in a respectful and collaborative work environment.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Salary Information: $93000- $110264 Annually

The successful candidate will be required to join The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). 

Essential Functions: ( Describe the principle accountabilities of the position that must be performed to accomplish the purpose(s)/goals of the job.  Focus on results or outcome of the job, not the way in which the job is performed)  
  • Collaborate with team to conceptualize and frame episodes and interviews
  • Conduct research on selected topics
  • Identify and reach out to potential guests/experts
  • Conduct interviews with guests/experts
  • Collaborate with producer to identify “selects” from the interview transcript and pull audio
  • Collaborate with producer to create episode outline based on research and interviews
  • Write and record scripted narration and/or improvised narration based on talking points
  • Collaborate with the producer and editor to ensure the narrative flows smoothly
  • Provide input on sound design and music choices to enhance the vision and personality of the show
  • Participate in team meetings and provide updates on progress and challenges.
  • Review and provide feedback on the final edited episodes before publication.
  • Set, maintain and develop the tone, sound, reputation and voice of the show as its host
  • Write, produce and edit content for social media platforms in collaboration with podcast team
  • Host live and virtual events, including KQED marketing and membership events
  • Assist in producing events as needed
  • Stay informed and assist where needed with show promotion and marketing, audience analytics, and special projects/series
  • Other duties as assigned
 

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • A minimum of three or more years of experience in journalism, with an emphasis and expertise in internet culture
  • Demonstrated ability to host audio and video content
  • Demonstrated ability to interview and communicate with a variety of individuals
  • Familiarity with audio and video production processes and tools, i.e., use of recording equipment, Descript, CapCut,  etc
  • Experience writing audio stories and scripts
  • Ability to prioritize and manage working on multiple episodes at once while meeting deadlines and communicating clearly with rest of the team
  • Proficiency and strong interest in engaging listeners via social media or other platforms
  • Fluency and experience with vertical video production, including on-camera experience
  • Strong story pitching skills
  • Excellent collaborator, knows how to work on a collective vision and support the team, including giving and receiving feedback
  • Strong understanding of journalistic principles, ethics and standards
  • Experience hosting conversations in front of a live audience

Knowledge/Experience Desired

  • Experience working in a demographically and racially diverse news environment strongly desired
  • Experience writing and publishing print/digital stories 
  • Experience working in a collaborative podcast production team or workflow
  • Longform storytelling experience
  • Fluency in a language other than English (Spanish, Chinese, etc.) a plus
