Position: Hot Lunch Director
Supervisor: Principal
Location: Kitchen, Food Storage, and Cafeteria
Position Summary: The Hot Lunch director ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the school cafeteria and is responsible for the production of nutritious, appetizing meals for students and staff, while meeting all governmental regulations. The Hot Lunch Director must also ensure that St.
James is maximizing its resources and minimizing production costs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintains high standards of cleanliness and safety in the kitchen, food storage areas, and cafeteria and oversees and participates in the cleaning and sanitizing on a daily basis.
• Ensures food handling and serving is performed according to regulation.
• Plans menus to conform with federal USDA requirements to provide nutritious meals while prioritizing from scratch cooking, maximizing inventory, and minimizing costs.
• Develops and serves menus which prioritize from scratch cooking with fresh, whole food ingredients and decrease reliance on processed foods.
• Responsible for weekly, monthly, and quarterly ordering and inventory of all food and supplies needed to ensure St. James resources are maximized.
• Responsible for receipt and dating of food shipments to enable first-in first-out use of food.
• Updates and maintains a School Food Safety HACCP plan and standardized recipes per USDA standards.
• Maintains daily production records in accordance with Office of Public Instruction (OPI) standards.
• Ensure proper storage of all food in accordance with USDA requirements on a daily basis and before school breaks (summer, Christmas, and spring break).
• Ensures that all equipment in the cafeteria area is in safe, working condition and immediately notifies the principal when repairs are needed.
• Ensures kitchen and food service area are cleaned and inspected one week before school starts.
• Communicates Hot Lunch program needs to the Principal on as needed basis in
regard to supplies and equipment.
• Assists the Principal in obtaining grant funding for the Hot Lunch program as needed.
• Attends training approved by the Principal as needed.
• Assists in updating and maintaining the School Wellness Plan.
• Assists the Principal and Business Administrator in analyzing Hot Lunch program financial data and help ensure the fiscal stability of the Hot Lunch program.
Qualifications:
• Serve-Safe Certification, or ability to obtain and maintain certification.
• Experienced in the preparation of school lunch menus and meals. (Preferred)
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Maintain good health, high moral character, and a good attendance record.
• Exhibits personal standards of grooming and dress appropriate for the food service program.
• Have the ability to organize and carry out lunchroom procedures.
• Professional tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents, and the community.
• Have the ability to make appropriate and timely decisions.
• Be able to lift fifty pounds (50lbs.).
• Meet the legal requirements relative to a criminal background check.
All school employees must have:
1. A current medical examination with TB test
2. Background check
3. Other forms required by DCFS
