Location : Taconic Biosciences is seeking a Laboratory Animal Veterinary Nurse Intern to join our Animal Quality team in this onsite, paid summer internship. This role will work at both our Germantown, NY and Rensselaer, NY sites.
The Pay : $20.00 per hour.
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors. These factors include geographic location, experience, training, education, and local market conditions and could exceed the advertised salary range. The Internship: Our Animal Quality department works with Taconic’s animals and staff to ensure our animals receive the best care possible. The Laboratory Animal Veterinary Nurse Preceptorship will allow a student to increase their experience in the many different aspects of Laboratory Veterinary Nurse duties, including a deep understanding of rodent care and welfare. The student will get the opportunity to see multiple types of housing styles, why the style is chosen for the health status, and the differences between them. You can deepen your understanding of genetics and embryology, perform your own enrichment studies, discuss career options in the laboratory animal medicine field, and be a valued member of our team. The Animal Quality department works with our surgical departments to ensure aseptic technique is being used during surgical procedures and observation of the procedures is part of the curriculum. Biosecurity risks and decisions such as how we transfer supplies from one barrier to another is covered too! No two days are ever the same and there is always something to learn, so come learn with us!
A Laboratory Animal Veterinary Nurse Intern can expect to: - Assist in training of others; identify a process that needs additional training, create a presentation on your plan and present to the Animal Quality and Leadership team.
- Participate in the care of specialized animal models (i.e. arthritis model, humanized models) and help discover innovative palliative care options.
- Become familiar with rodent husbandry, restraint techniques, and blood collection techniques.
- Participate in cross functional areas such as health monitoring, response teams, or customer questions.
- Gain an understanding of regulatory oversight and compliance such as legal and IACUC requirements, including protocols.
- Have a hands-on opportunity to experience a career within Veterinary Sciences.
- Network within our global organization.
- Participate in an end of summer presentation on the knowledge and skills you’ve obtained, with provided exposure to leadership.
Eligibility: - Must be enrolled in an academic program with minimum 1 semester completed in pursuit of an Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or PhD, or be graduating Spring 2025 within veterinary sciences or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness and want to learn.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: This role requires physical activity, including prolonged periods of standing, recurring bending, and lifting items up to 25 pounds. The work environment may involve exposure to chemicals, the use of protective equipment, and operating heavy machinery. Additionally, you may encounter varying temperatures, outdoor conditions, strong odors, and moderate noise levels.
