Project Overview:

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.

Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will be working as part of the Mechanical Handling team designing the areas of material handling equipment, treatment and vitrification systems, and/or supporting utilities. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in mechanical handling design and will be capable of developing design documents and procurement documents, including Specifications, Material Requisitions, Mechanical Handling diagrams, Mechanical Flow diagrams and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. The position requires managing and dispositioning Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and supporting de risking efforts that will include interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client.

This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership

Major Responsibilities:

Level 1

• Must have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems.
• Participate in System Design verification activities that support the DOE-STD-1189-2016, Integration of Safety into the Design Process.
• Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
• Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
• Develop and revise Mechanical Handling design and procurement documents.
• Support the procurement of equipment by developing procurement packages, reviewing quotations and evaluating them technically; review of vendor submittals and resolution of technical issues during the procurement of mechanical equipment.
• Coordinate with the systems engineering group and other groups in development of equipment requirements.
• Review and create engineering dispositions for field change notices, non-conformance reports, and condition reports.
• Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.
• Attend weekly meetings to discuss progress, schedule, and roadblocks.
• Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule.
• Perform in a highly collaborative environment where all team members participate in resolving design challenges.
• Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction
• Maintain continuous personal and professional development while also contributing to the development of the team.

Level 2

• Manage discipline work process execution and assure technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract and industry codes and standards.
• Understand and engage in the engineering design process that identifies, interprets, incorporates, and verifies requirements by implementation into design and procurement documents.
• Support the PEM/PE/EGS on interfaces with DOE, DNFSB, WDOH, and Ecology.
• Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule and support PEM/PE/EGS in creating schedules that align with project/program.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Level 1

• Requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering and a minimum of 5-8 years of relevant professional work experience.

Level 2

• Requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering and a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant professional work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
• Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
• Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
