The Role.  MVS is seeking an innovative and culturally inclusive upper school mathematics teacher and advisor committed to developing inquisitive, critical thinkers, focused on understanding the ‘why’  behind mathematical principles versus the ‘how’ of following a formula. The Upper School Mathematics Teacher must be a passionate and skillful teacher, who is eager to invest her/his talents in our upper school mathematics program. They must establish a supportive and engaging environment for upper school students (grades 9-12), demonstrate the ability to create developmentally appropriate curricula, work collaboratively with colleagues and parents, have excellent communication skills, and demonstrate teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of different teaching and learning styles. In addition, this teacher will have completed coursework or possess teaching experience in specific subfields of mathematics (e.g., statistics and probability, computer science, calculus, etc.) related to her/his teaching responsibilities.

  • And of course, you will get to Teach! As an upper school mathematics teacher, you will teach four sections ranging in content from algebra I through multivariate calculus.

Expectations:

  • Demonstrate a teaching proficiency and comfort with a variety of teaching methods and learning needs; most importantly supporting immersive, experiential learning;

  • Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning through engagement in ongoing professional development;
  • Build collaborative partnership with students, faculty, and parents;
  • Develop and facilitate culturally inclusive curricula and inclusive classroom practices;
  • All faculty can expect to travel with students (grades 4-12) for 1-2 weeks per year;
  • This is primarily an upper school position, but based upon yearly enrollment could be asked to teach in the middle school or support Immersion Term in a different division;

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach four sections of Mathematics. One possibility includes Algebra I (one section), Algebra II (two sections), and Statistics and/or Computer Science electives (one section).
  • Lead/Co-lead an Immersion program in January
  • Develop and propose new courses each year, including new Immersion programs
  • Update Blackbaud, MVS’ Student Information System (SIS), and Canvas, MVS’ Learning Management Software (LMS), regularly to keep both students and families informed about student progress and performance
  • Write recommendation letters for seniors applying to college
  • Attend scheduled meetings, including after school meetings
  • Fulfill all other faculty responsibilities that may occur outside the school day, including writing reports and planning, chaperoning student events, attending school-related functions, which include but are not limited to: Caregiver Information Night, Immersion Information Night, Immersion Open House, Aries Colloquium, Academic Awards, and Graduation.
  • Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 students
  • Lead and/or advise extracurricular activities, which include student clubs and athletics;
  • Report to the Upper School Division Director;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a desire to work with pre-teen and teenage students in an experiential setting;
  • Possess excellent communication skills;
  • Ideal candidates will possess prior experience teaching mathematics in upper and/or middle school settings, advising clubs, coaching athletics, and/or leading student travel learning programs;
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree(s) in Mathematics, or other related degree; 
  • Candidates without prior teaching experience will also be considered;
