Job Description

Volunteer Coordinator Job Posting

PEACE HOUSE COMMUNITY

Mission Statement:

Peace House Community (PHC) nourishes its members’ bodies and souls by providing a safe space for everyone. PHC enriches the lives of its members, volunteers and students by offering a place to belong for everyone who comes through its doors.

Vision Statement:

Community members who have been wounded by economic and social dislocation will be healed through caring relationships in a supportive community.

Guiding Principles:

Peace House Community uses the following guidelines to maintain its founding principles:

  • Respect the uniqueness of others’ spiritual paths.
  • Ensure all voices are heard; respect the diversity of opinions.
  • Listen with an open mind to the thoughts of others and have the wisdom to learn from all.
  • Practice non-violence through self-restraint, encouraging words, compassionate actions and respectful listening.
  • Remain calm while others around us may be agitated and irritable.
  • Accept difficult situations with grace and serenity as we work towards conflict resolution.
  • Utilize patience and maturity to hear all ideas and come to a responsible conclusion or decision.

Since 1985, Peace House Community has provided a place to belong to those most in need. Our building welcomes anyone who comes to us with emotional, relational, or physical needs. We are a nonprofit community center serving adults who face social isolation, homelessness, economic instability, and marginalization from the larger society. Most of our community members come from the Ventura Village neighborhood of Minneapolis. We do not provide social services ourselves, although we partner with agencies that do. We focus on affirming and accepting our community members, rather than “fixing” their lives. Visit peacehousecommunity.org for more information.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) will recruit, welcome, train, and provide ongoing support to those who donate their time to Peace House Community. The VC will do this by developing networks with PHC supporters, local faith communities, educational facilities, community organizations, and other agencies that can help PHC fulfill its volunteer needs. The VC will ensure that each person who gives their time to PHC feels appreciated, can share their thoughts and suggestions about PHC, and has a positive experience serving our community members. The VC will accomplish this by maintaining regular communication with individual volunteers, expressing the agency’s gratitude, and actively seeking feedback from volunteers.

This position will be responsible for maintaining and growing a network of ongoing and episodic volunteers to ensure PHC can fulfill its mission well.

This is a part-time (10 hours a week), non-exempt position that reports to the Executive Director. The Volunteer Coordinator works with other staff to supervise volunteers. The position requires a mixture of onsite work, remote work, and site visits for presentations, etc.

Contact Marti Maltby at 612-870-7263 or marti@peacehousecommunity.org with any questions.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create outreach materials and manage the ongoing recruitment strategy.
  • Attend volunteer recruitment fairs or community events to promote volunteerism.
  • Present volunteer opportunities at PHC to the wider community, emphasizing the impact volunteers will make through their time at PHC.

  • Maintain open lines of communication with volunteers through face to face meetings, virtual meetings, phone calls, and electronic communication.
  • Meet volunteers at PHC periodically to reinforce connection and observe PHC’s operations firsthand.
  • Orient and train volunteers on expectations, opportunities, challenges, and procedures.
  • Ensure that volunteers know what staff they can speak with regarding concerns or questions.
  • Maintain updated volunteer job descriptions based on the needs of the organization and assist other staff with identifying volunteer opportunities in their programs.
  • In coordination with the Executive Director, maintain an updated Volunteer Handbook.
  • Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with colleges, United Way, church individuals/groups, community groups and associations, and businesses/organizations.
  • Plan volunteer appreciation events and recognition within the agency.
  • Keep volunteers informed of PHC needs and opportunities to serve in new ways.
  • With the Executive Director, track volunteer contributions to PHC.
  • Notify the Executive Director of volunteer concerns regarding treatment of community members, safety, and other issues.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Commitment to Peace House Community’s mission, vision, and values with a passion for engaging volunteers in our work in the community.
  • Ability to develop and implement creative ideas to engage community partners, volunteers, and staff in supporting the agency.

  • Initiative and independence, with limited direction from staff.
  • Ability to identify long-term and short-term challenges and opportunities for growth.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive materials in a confidential manner.
  • Must be able to work with and respect individuals from diverse backgrounds with a high degree of cultural awareness and respect.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited educational institution; or demonstrably equivalent knowledge gained through alternative courses of study, employment, and/or life experience.
